Brown-Headed Nuthatch~ Sitta pusilla
Found only in the southeastern United States, the Brown-Headed Nuthatch is one of a few birds who has been observed using tools. Both adults and juveniles have been documented carrying small twigs to pry underneath bark for bugs. They are well-known for their "squeeky toy" chattering commonly heard anywhere near large pines in the south. Our resident Brown-Headed Nuthatch family here at Timber Tiger headquarters are some of the friendliest birds residing in our pine trees. My sketch was inspired by a photograph we took one afternoon as they foraged among the bark of the huge Loblolly pines. (We have yet to see them use tools!)
