Raggiana Bird of Paradise~ Paradisaea raggiana
This beautiful bird is native to Papua, New Guinea. The name, "Raggiana," was given to this species by the first Italian naturalist and explorer to journey to and document this region, Count Luigi Maria D'Albertis, in honor of the Marquis Francis Raggi of Genoa. Females are generally the same shape as males, but without any of the extravagant display plumes. As with just about all birds of paradise, the two almost look like separate species. The male Raggiana Bird of Paradise displays in groups. These displays involve elaborate dances and shaking of their bright display plumage. My original reference photo was taken by me at the Columbia Zoo in South Carolina this past spring, 2018. There, we got to observe a male and female interacting. Very unique and unforgettable birds!
