Red-Headed Woodpecker~ Melanerpes erythrocephalus
Native to the eastern half of North America, over the past 200 years this species has exhibited both abundance and scarcity. It is threatened in Canada and some US states due to vanishing habitat. The Red-Headed Woodpecker was considered a symbol of war for the Cherokee Indians. They often used the head as a battle ornament. The original photo that inspired this sketch was taken in my backyard during nesting season in the summer of 2017. The mother and father woodpeckers would come to our suet feeder. They would then take food up to their young who were eagerly waiting for them in the nearby pine trees!
