Gray Catbird

Dumetella carolinensis

If you happen to hear a cat "meowing" on a warm summer afternoon anywhere on the eastern side of North America, look again.  It may not be a cat, but a Gray Catbird!  This excellent mimic, related to mockingbirds, often copies not only other birds' songs, but also mechanical sounds and tree frog calls.  Our fearless Gray Catbird couple here at Timber Tiger headquarters stops by the back porch almost every hour during spring to feed on the suet cakes we set out.  Before chowing down, each catbird makes a series of no less than ten cat "meows," as if to announce it's arrival.  The Gray Catbird has become one of my favorite summer migrants to observe due to their gregarious nature and curiosity.
