Gila Woodpecker~ Melanerpes uropygialis Along with Cactus Wren, the Gila Woodpecker is one of the most vocally-dominant birds to make it's presence known throughout the Sonoran desert of the southwest. These woodpeckers can be found in southern Arizona and surrounding states, down to Mexico. Blooms of large Saguaro Cacti are a favorite food for the Gila to feast upon (as evident in my sketch!). They also like to drink from hummingbird feeders (and sometimes completely destroy them in the process!) A rarity among woodpeckers, the Gila has been known to raise three broods in one year. Original Photo for art inspiration: Photographer unknown. Photo found on numerous public photo sharing sites.
