Brown-Headed Nuthatch~ Sitta pusilla
Found in the southeastern United States, the Brown-Headed Nuthatch is one of a few birds who has been observed using tools. Both adults and juveniles have been documented using small twigs to pry underneath bark for bugs. A favorite here at Timber Tiger Treasures. During the Spring of 2017, our local Brown-Headed Nuthatches successfully nested in one of our homemade nest boxes. The original photograph that inspired this sketch was taken during this nesting period as one of our nuthatches posed on the outside of the box between trips to their backyard feeder. Nearly every day of the year, these birds can be heard high up in our slash pines squeeking and carrying on as they forage for their daily meal.
