American Kestral~Falco sparverius
At about the size of a Mourning Dove and weighing as much as 34 pennies, the American Kestral is the smallest of all North American falcons. As a cavity nester that cannot excavate its own nesting hole, it relies on finding larger holes of flickers or Pileated Woodpeckers. American Kestrals readily take to nest boxes of appropriate dimensions placed in open areas. Unfortunately, this species has been in decline, most likely due to a number of reasons including competition with non-native European Starlings for nest cavities.
