Poppy Anemone~ Anemone coronaria
Native perennial to the eastern Mediterranean, middle east, and north Africa, the Poppy Anemone is the National Flower for the State of Israel. It was introduced to England before 1596. The Latin name translates to "crown anemone," and refers to the "crown-like" center of the flower. Because of this, the Poppy Anemone was often associated with royalty, and became popular during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Now cultivated in North America, this flower grows readily in zones 7-10 and prefers full sun to part shade conditions.
