Red-Breasted Nuthatch~ Sitta canadensis
Common throughout much of northern North America, the Red-Breasted Nuthatch migrates south in winter, especially during "irruption" years when the pine seed crop up north is bad.  This inquisitive little bird is usually heard giving its "yank-like" call before it is seen.  Like a typical nuthatch, it can be observed walking head-first down pine trees, hiding pine seeds beneath the bark.  The original photograph that inspired this Red-Breasted Nuthatch sketch was taken here at TImber Tiger headquarters in Dacula, GA during the Fall of 2018.  It was really exciting to see a typical "northern" bird in our yard so far of its range!  2018-19 happens to be an "irruption" year for these birds, so make sure to look (and listen!)  for these nuthatches if you live in the southern portion of North America!
