Gull-Billed Tern~ Gelochelidon nilotica
This species is known to live near coastal areas and salt water. Six subspecies exist throughout the world, with the aranea subspecies being common along the eastern and southern United States coast (the subspecies on this product!) This tern doesn't normally dive for food like other terns, but can be found flycatching over marshy fields. The initial photograph that inspired this sketch was taken at the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge during the Spring of 2018. A small group of Gull-Billed Terns were standing in the road of the wildlife drive. One flew in holding a small frog it had caught and seemed to be showing it off to the other birds, perhaps part of a mating display? Very entertaining birds ot watch!
