Ruby-Throated Hummingbird~ Archilochus colubris
Eastern North America’s only breeding hummingbird. Most migrate across the Gulf of Mexico to and from their breeding grounds, a round-trip of almost 1,000 miles (1600 km).  They have been observed flying low over wave tops off the coast of Louisiana and Alabama.  This flight can take 18 to 22 hours, amazing for such a tiny bird!  The sketch used in this product was inspired by one of our many Ruby-Throats we get every summer in our backyard.  I waited until she took a short break on our window feeder then photographed her in the bright morning sunlight. The iridescence of her feathers was beautiful with the sun shining just right on them.  *Information taken from www.birdsna.org
