Black-Necked Stilt~ Himantopus mexicanus
Found on most of the coast of the United States and throughout South America.  This bird can be found probing mudflats and very shallow water near the shore, seeking out crustaceans and other aquatic invertebrates.  Amazingly enough, just two hours after hatching, young Black-Necked Stilts are able to swim.  However, they remain with their parents for about one month.  The original photograph that inspired this sketch was taken at the Savannah Natoinal Wildlife Refuge.
