Plush-Crested Jay~ Cyanocorax chrysops

Resident to most of southwest Brazil, the Plush-Crested Jay is a member of the Corvidae family (Crows and allies).  This omnivorous species is quite social and typically forages in groups of up to 12 individuals.  It's diet is similar of other jay-like birds; insects, fruits, and nestlings and eggs of smaller birds.  Plush-Crested Jays have been known to imitate many sounds of other birds and also humans.  The photo that inspired this watercolor painting was taken at the Greenville Zoo in Greenville, SC in early April, 2018. I remember this bird being very interested in what I was doing as I pointed my camera at him, yet somewhat neophobic.  Really reminded me of our backyard Blue-Jays!
