White-Backed Vulture~Gyps africanus An Old World vulture native to Africa, this species, along with many other African vulture species, has undergone a drastic decline in the past few years. What was once one of Africa's most common birds is now placed on the IUCN's Red list of Critically Endangered animals. A main contributing factor to this decline has been poisoning by poachers not wanting the vultures to give their illegal animal kills away. The photo I used as a sketch reference was taken at the Cleveland Zoo in July, 2017. The temperature was close to 95 degrees (f) and two of the White-Backed Vultures sat on a large tree branch in an attempt to cool off in the shade.
