Prothonotary Warbler~ Protonotaria citreaOnce known as the Golden Swamp Warbler, this bright yellow bird breeds in hardwood swamps in the eastern US and winters in northern South America, central America, and the West Indies. The name "Prothonotary" was later given to this bird because it resembled prelates in the Roman Catholic Church who wear yellow robes. It is the only eastern-inhabiting US warbler to nest in natural or artificial cavities, andf prefers to forage near dense, woody streams in low foliage. Prothonotary Warbler is unfortunately declining due to habitat loss. The bird featured in my drawing was photographed early May of 2018 at George Pierce Park, a local park not far from where we live. He readily posed for photos early one spring morning, while loudly singing his simple "sweet, sweet, sweet" song. (This is one of my favorite warblers!)
