Free Gray Catbird Coloring Pages!

Cool Catbird

In honor of June's Bird of the Month, I decided to do something a little bit different. With kids out of school and all the days ahead that need to be filled with some type of activity to entertain them (or yourself!), I've included two blank, printable, and totally FREE Catbird pictures I created using Prismacolor black marker. These images were inspired by photos I took last month of our two summer resident Catbirds that visit our back porch suet feeders multiple times a day.

The Gray Catbird is really a plain-looking bird, all gray with a black cap on his head and rusty-red feathers under-tail. He usually poses with his tail straight up, revealing the odd crimson feathers beneath. Both males and females look almost identical. The photo below was taken May 2018 and is a good example of what we call the "Catbird pose!"

Catbirds belong to the Mimidae family of birds that includes mockingbirds, thrashers, tremblers, and other New World catbirds. The most notable trait of this family is just like their name implies, they are excellent mimics of not only other birds, but other sounds around them as well. The Gray catbird gets it's name from the signature sound it makes that sounds just like the "meowing" of a cat. It has also been described as sounding like a crying baby. I'm assuming the name "Catbird" sounded better than "Cry-babybird,"

Listen for yourself!:

Our Gray Catbirds will stay here in Georgia until about October, when they make the short migration south, the south Georgia or Florida for the Winter.

Gray Catbird in Florida

I remember when we visited Marco Island in Southern Florida in January and saw Catbirds EVERYWHERE! They sought out berry bushes near marshy wilderness and I remember thinking "so THIS is where you all vacation in Winter!" I created this colored pencil sketch from one of my photographs of a Florida Catbird from that trip. He was all about these small dark blue berries growing just off the boardwalk at Briggs Nature Center in Collier county, FL.

I want to mention one more awesome offer going on ALL June. Every customer will receive a free pair of Gray Catbird stud earrings with their order (limit one per customer, while supplies last). These make great gifts for you or someone else! It's my way of saying "Thank you" for your business!
